The Dial
Introduction to The Dial

The Dial was a magazine originally published by one of its founders Ralph Waldo Emerson in 1840.

From the very first publication it was evident that Emerson wanted The Dial to cover a variety of thought leader topics from human relations, art and literature. In his introduction Emerson wrote “We do not wish to say pretty or curious things…but, if we can, to give expression to that spirit which lifts men to a higher platform…brings them worthy aims and pleasures.”

Like Emerson we feel that it is time for new ideas and new modes of thought that “lift the spirit” as opposed to the regurgitation of business methodology. In Emerson’s words “We wish not to multiply books, but to report life, our resources are therefore not so much the pens of practiced writers, as the discourse of the living, and the portfolios which friendship has opened to us.” Thus The Dial’s writings will be constituted by members stories, case studies (anonymously) and other issues relevant to The Emerson Project.

Therefore The Dial will be an electronic publication of relevance to those seeking to grow both personally and professionally.
While we are unable to receive contributions from some of the original and amazing contributors to The Dial (including William Butler Yeats, T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings, Kahlil Gibran, Ezra Pound, Bertrand Russell, Carl Sandburg, Vincent van Gogh, and Renoir!) we will endeavour to make them as interesting and engaging as we possibly can.
